is the **methodological foundation** of the PTL systematics. No other module can dispense with it: whoever reconstructs fundamental ontological assumptions, examines validity claims, or lays bare normative structures must first know with which conceptual tools a text operates at all – and whether these tools are sharp enough. ensures precisely this.
The module does not examine *things*, but rather **expressions and their use**. Its object is the question of what an expression X means in the concrete context of argumentation – not what the dictionary says about it, but how it *functions* in the text: what it is employed as, what it includes and excludes, which inferences it supports, and where it becomes fragile. This is **definition-in-use** as guiding principle: meaning is not disclosed by lexica, but by the argumentative environment.
The methodological toolkit comprises nine elements. **Indicator search** identifies passages in which conceptual work is performed, explicitly or implicitly – definitions, delimitations, terminological warnings, borderline cases. **Paraphrase and regimentation** transform these passages into clearer logical structures in order to render hidden assumptions visible. The **contrast and minimal-pair test** measures differences in meaning through systematic conceptual substitution. The **necessary/sufficient analysis** lays bare the conditional structure of a concept and searches for counterexamples. Two diagnoses are fundamentally distinct here and must not be conflated: **ambiguity** (an expression has several meanings, resolvable through disambiguation) and **vagueness** (an expression has indistinct boundaries that cannot in principle be closed off through definitions). The **inferential role analysis**, finally, asks which rules of inference a concept carries along with it – which burdens of justification it distributes, which objections it admits or rejects.
Two tools deserve special emphasis. The **Pickwickian sense analysis**, following C. D. Broad, examines whether everyday concepts have been redefined in the text in a purely formal-mathematical manner – such that they satisfy logical conditions while having lost their internal, phenomenal structure. This finding is not a mere linguistic slip, but often a profound argumentative fork in the road. **Synoptic synthesis**, by contrast, embeds a concept within marginal phenomenal domains and thereby breaks open incomplete isolations: whoever understands a concept only through its standard cases understands it but by half.
